Gorey at the Getty

I had guests from out of town last week, so we made a trip out to the Getty Villa in Malibu. It’s gorgeous! Great care was taken to replicate a Roman palace in order to properly house Getty’s art collection, and it all overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon. However, some of the statues struck me as so odd. I guess we’re used to seeing these antiquities in white marble, so when Getty recreated these destroyed works in black (with white eyes), it felt like I was walking through an Edward Gorey story. The Doubtful Guest, perhaps. Or a grown up tourist version of the Gashlycrumb Tinies?
