Koudelka: Gypsies

Josef Koudelka, Czechoslovakia (Straznice), 1966, Festival of Gypsy music

I guess it’s easy to romanticize Gypsies from a comfortable, American perspective. But Josef Koudelka’s images are so astounding… I’m not the only one who sees the beauty in their difficult lives. Koudelka took photos of Roma society in Romania, Hungary, France, Spain and former-Czechoslovakia from 1962 to 1971. Aperture just released a new & improved edition (with 30 new photos) last fall. Too many gorgeous books out there! This bibliophilia is an expensive habit…
