Monica Nouwens’ LA

Last week, I made it out to Leonardo Bravo’s Big City Forum at the Armory Center for the Arts, and boy am I glad I did because I discovered the work of Monica Nouwens. She is a Dutch Photographer who came to LA on an exchange program at CalArts and seems to have fallen in love with the place. I think it’s safe to say this. LA is so weird and wonderful, Europeans have been falling in love with this place for ages.

Anyway, she showed us a slideshow of her latest work. It’s a series called Look At Me And Tell Me If You Have Known Me Before and it is beautiful, dreamy, magical and poetic. I fell in love. For a few years now, she’s been following a group of young people who have chosen to opt out of the mainstream. They sleep on couches or in abandoned buildings and work infrequently, make music and art. This is the other side of America. They’re Allen Ginsberg’s “angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night.” Nouwens’ photographs of them are beautiful.

You can see more images in the series here.
