Double Trouble: Heti & Gaitskill

I just stumbled across a really lovely interview between Mary Gaitskill and Sheila Heti in The Believer. I love Heti’s comments about one of Gaitskill’s stories:

I love the story “Mirrorball” in your recent collectionI can’t stop thinking about the boy’s soul and the girl’s soul. It’s almost like a great new myth of what goes on between women and men who have sex with each other. It’s almost a perfect crystallization of one of the things you communicate in your writing—that there is so much going on in our humanity that we aren’t aware of, and our lack of care and sensitivity is a kind of tragedy, a tragedy of coarseness which diminishes us, though we are not exactly to blame.

You can read the interview in its entirety here.
