Bikini Kill Archive

Did you know Kathleen Hannah has a blog? Great, another good blog to read. Now I’ll never leave the house! Anyway, the main reason why I’m writing this is because she also started another blog (separate from her blog, get it straight) to collect anecdotes and memories about Bikini Kill. She’s posted a call for submissions:

Please add your Bikini Kill story to this blog! It can be totally off the top of your head and doesn’t need to be fancy. Maybe it’s your reaction to a song we wrote, something weird that happened at one of our shows, a personal anecdote or just WHATEVER. Feel free to send images too!

Send yr story to and we will post it or just leave a comment somewhere on the site. Thanks!

We are also trying to collect press clippings and videos of our shows so if you have any you wanna send us please do!

Hannah recently donated personal papers spanning 1989 to 1996 — which included zines, essays and correspondence — to NYU’s Fales Library.

I clearly remember the first time I saw Bikini Kill play with Nation of Ulysses at DC Space in Washington, DC. I don’t remember the exact year…it must have been the early 90s sometime. Anyway, I was riveted.  She had the word “slut” written in huge letters across her bare belly, and I distinctly remember her screeching into the microphone “I’m faaaaat!” I’d never seen anything like it. When they pulled into DC, it was like a storm blew into town. Some people didn’t get it and got very defensive and a little hostile. Mostly the boys had this problem…
