clutching the classics

So it’s come to this. Books have become fashion accessories.

Kate Spade has created a series of clutches that resemble classic book covers for her Fall 2010 collection. I read these lines on Vanity Fair’s web site with a mixture of fascination and horror:

“We wanted to pretend we had our own publishing house,” said creative director Deborah Lloyd of her inspiration for the bags. They designed all the clutch “cover” art in-house and were able to get permission to use The Great Gatsby, Emma, The Importance of Being Earnest, Great Expectations, and A Tale of Two Cities because they were written before lawyers thought about licensing potential. (How quaint.)

Something tells me these fake books will cost a pretty penny.
