Baader and Ensslin on trial, photographer unknown

Here are a few other points related to the Baader-Meinhof post above:

  1. In a bizarre side note, in 2002 it was revealed that Ulrike Meinhof’s brain had been preserved for study, and it was concluded that a brain operation she had in 1962 could explain her evolution from intellectual journalist to gun-toting revolutionary. Are they implying that a woman can only become a revolutionary if there’s something wrong with her brain? You can read it here.
  2. Also, Brigitte Mohnhaupt, the young woman who took over as leader while Baader, Meinhof and Ensslin sat in jail, was released from prison in 2007. Some people aren’t happy about this. You can read about it here.
  3. And, last but not least, it was just revealed in May that the man who shot the young student Ohnesorg (who was demonstrating at the shah’s arrival at West Berlin’s opera house in 1967), was in fact working for the Stasi (the East German secret police).  This shines a whole new light on the incident because this student’s death fanned the flames of the left-wing movement, including groups like the Baader-Meinhof group, in West Germany.
